Poetic Mode:
Poetic documentary is seen as a modernist art.
Using poetic mode sacrifices the conventions of continunity editing in documentary.
Scenes are rhythamic and fits the music.
Raw materials that filmmakers select and arrange into associations and patterns of their choosing.
No relations between audience and actors e.g. Rain by Joris Ivens (1929).
Ivens creation is now seen as a work of art.
Another example is Jean Mitry's Pacific 231 (1944) music and the sound of the engine.
Poetic mode is used in historical and knowledgable documentary. Nichols, B. (2001) introduction to documentary, Bloomington: Indiana university press. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvg2HH4PEDE
